Is it available to apply for the exemption of Vehicle License Tax during the period of travelling abroad when the car is unused?

(Taichung News) Those citizens whose vehicles are unused during the period of travelling abroad over a month can apply to Motor Vehicles Office for the exemption of the Vehicle License Tax and the Vehicle Fuel Tax as a result that the vehicle is not be used temporarily for a period of time. On account of the base rate for the vehicle tax on a daily basis, during the period that the vehicle is not used, the tax exemption saves the citizens some money. Those citizens can also apply for the refund related to an overpayment of tax!

The Local Taxation Bureau of Taichung City government indicated that a citizen Mr. Chen made an inquiry about the availability of applying for the exemption of Vehicle License Tax because his car will not be used during the period he travelling abroad on business. The case officer of the tax bureau explained to him that he should apply to the tax office for not using his vehicle temporarily for a period of time in advance. Base on the actual days that the vehicle is not used, the Vehicle License Tax will not be charged during the period, and the citizen can also apply for the refund of the overpay tax. But once using the vehicle, the citizen should register the resumption at the Motor Vehicles Office.

The Bureau gave further explanation that during the period of downtime, once the vehicle found running, the repayment related to the tax avoidance will be charged and with additional penalty of fine up to twice the amount of the tax. For your own sake of saving money, never drive the vehicle once it is applied for not being used on the public roads temporarily.
