(Taichung) Ms. Yang from Beitun District has commissioned a dealer to recycle her old vehicle, but did not apply to the regulatory agency for vehicle scrapping. She called and asked if such an act will affect the tax.
The Local Tax Bureau of Taichung City Government expresses that some vehicle owners were found failing to apply for vehicle scrapping after recycling the vehicle. If the license plates dismantled from the vehicle are used on other vehicles driving on public roads, both vehicles will be tracked down and fined.
The Bureau further explains that, if a vehicle is damaged or can no longer be used, it must be assigned to a vehicle recycling, clearance and disposal organization certified by the Environmental Protection Administration (EPA), Executive Yuan to dispose of the vehicle; both plates must be submitted to the regulatory agency to complete the vehicle scrapping process. Then the vehicle license tax may be imposed until the day before the recycling date on a pro-rata basis. For vehicle owners who have paid the vehicle license tax for the entire year may apply for a tax refund.
The Bureau would like to remind everyone that those who fail to submit the license plates and use them on another vehicle will be subject to a fine twice the annual tax payable and such loss outweighs the gain.
