Motor vehicle transfer via inheritance shall be completed as soon as possible to avoid penalties for continued use of the vehicle after the revocation of its license plate

The Local Tax Bureau of Taichung City Government expressed that, with respect to motor vehicles parked on the roadside after the death of owner, they often received inquiry from the beneficiary asking why they had received a fine notification for vehicle license tax.
The Bureau explained that, according to Road Traffic Safety Regulations, the beneficiary of motor vehicle should apply for transfer of vehicle via inheritance within a prescribed period after the death of vehicle owner. Otherwise, the license plate (vehicle registration plate) will be revoked directly. If the revoked motor vehicle is driven or parked on a public road, the tax collection authority will, in accordance with Paragraph 2 of Article 28 of Vehicle License Tax Act, charge the new vehicle owner, namely the beneficiary, with tax amount calculated from the license plate revocation date to the seizure date, plus a fine no more than twice the amount of tax owed,. Therefore, if the vehicle is driven or used by the beneficiary after the death of previous owner, the beneficiary should apply for the inheritance of motor vehicle via inheritance as soon as possible to avoid penalties for driving the vehicle or parking it on the roadside (public roads) after revocation of the license plate.
